Frederic Malle was born in Paris in 1962 into a family working in the perfumery industry—his grandfather Serge Heftler founded Christian Dior Perfumes, and his mother later worked as an art director at the same perfume house. Initially, he chose to study art history in New York, but in 1986 he made a change and accepted a position at the famous perfumery laboratory Roure Bertrand Dupont. At Roure, Frederic learned about raw materials, composition, and all aspects of perfume creation from some of the best professionals in the field. After working in the industry for more than 15 years, he was ready to embark on a new adventure. In 2000, using his connections and experience in the industry, he invited nine leading perfumers to create their own original perfumes with full creative freedom and no financial restrictions regarding ingredients or technologies. The end result was a stunning success, with the original perfumes now legendary in the industry, and the perfumers behind each creation finally receiving the recognition they deserved. Today, the brand has 68 perfumes, with the newest created in 2026.
